What is it like believing in God?

What is it like believing in God?

You get to believe that when you die, it's not the end it's just the beginning. You get to blame most of what happens on God's doing, because he wanted you this way or it's for the ultimate good. You get a sense of purpose, and it sugar coats the world.

In my opinion, you really have to be an idiot to believe in God. Tell me why you are not an idiot and can think for yourself. I'd really like to hear from some of the crazier religions out there (you know who you are!), but you mainstream religion folk are welcome too. Also, how is it not a crutch? Where is the proof?

Well.. I'm neither crazy religious, or even relaxed Christian.
Personally, I believe that religion is just another theory among the millions.
It's something that people rely on and endorse to make life easier.
But I don't call them idiots for doing this, if it helps them, who cares if it's valid or not?
I lean on music, but music isn't material and it cannot fix all my ills.

I, personally, would love to hear a christan or an educated face from another religion defend to us not only WHY religion is plausible, but why they would want to believe it themselves.

I would reccomend being kinder though, OP, you're just going to get a ration of shit from people who are insercure in their faith, and dont want anyone swaying them.
An SS, who totally recognizes that you're acting a bit dickish.

But on the whole, I can agree with you.

ok well you're wrong. ppl who believe in God are not idiots. i am a VERY strong christian and its not my opinion that God is real, to me it's fact! one thing you said wrongly is that we blame our problems on God because he made us that way. you are wrong. god created us and already knew what was going to happen and what choices are going to be made. life is just a test to give you the choice to go to heaven afterward or hell. god knows what happens but doesnt make you choose anything. the devil tries to pick on you and make sin sound and look really good when its not. he tempts you to sin. we do not blame problems on god. problems happen because the devil and the choices you make. why i believe this is because the bible. alot of historical events can be proven from the bible. the first ever recorded dinosaur was in the bible. and to me, christianity is alot smarter than thinking that the world came from some speck that blew up and made everything. on a different note, i am a christian but i dont believe in denominations (religion) the bible says have a relationship with god not a religion and it says not to split into denominations like baptist, methodist, ect... i'm nondenominational. another reason i believe he's real is because not only have i been saved, i have been baptised in the holy spirit (meaning i speak in tongues) thats proof to me. and i've also talked to god. (proof) so here's my proof. you dont have to agree but i hope you will

no. in your opinion it is a fact.
if it was truly a fact wouldn't everyone be christian?

one thing you said wrongly is that we blame our problems on God because he made us that way. you are wrong. god created us and already knew what was going to happen and what choices are going to be made.
um.. if god made us this way, then it is his fault, and you would be right to blame him.

life is just a test to give you the choice to go to heaven afterward or hell.
no, you only get to heaven if you kiss ass. if you're a nice person but don't believe, you still end up in hell, wheres the logic in that?

the devil tries to pick on you and make sin sound and look really good when its not. he tempts you to sin.
The devil, or Satan or Lucifer or whatever you want to call him was kicked out of heaven for disagreeing with god.. he was an angel, and the angels "know the glory of god", so if god is oh so wonderful, why would an angel disagree?

alot of historical events can be proven from the bible.
o rly? like what?

the first ever recorded dinosaur was in the bible.
uh, what? you've got to be kidding me.

you dont have to agree but i hope you will
The only good thing about christianity is jesus. he was a pretty cool guy. Pity about all the crap that followed.

I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.

O.o...
I was always under the assumption that the bible denied the existence of dinosaurs
What with Adam and Eve being the first created, and dinosaurs being millions and millions of years older than humans

How can it be a fact when christianity just blanetly copied preceding religions and put them in a context that christians thought was right and which was suitable for them?
xshes a RIOTx wrote: god created us and already knew what was going to happen and what choices are going to be made.life is just a test to give you the choice to go to heaven afterward or hell.

Contradiction? If god already knows what choices you're gonna make, that doesn't make life a "test" since he already knows wether you're gonna go to "heaven or hell".
xshes a RIOTx wrote: the first ever recorded dinosaur was in the bible. and to me, christianity is alot smarter than thinking that the world came from some speck that blew up and made everything.

The bible perfectly states that humans were the first living things on earth, when it has been proven that dinosaurs, as well as many other spieces, were here millions of years before. And to come think of it, the big bang theory isn't much different than the theory that god created everything. Since, both state that Mass was created from Energy (the reverse of E=MC^2). So if you say that the big bang theory is not true because it hasn't been explained where that energy came from, then the creation theory isn't true either because it hasn't been explained where god came from. And if you're gonna ask how did the idea that a “higher power” created the universe came to the minds of people at that time, when it couldn't be explained by science until recent times. Then the answer probably lies in pagan religions which actaully came up with the concept of humans having a "soul". However, while christianity drifted along it destroyed most of the pagan beliefs so only certain pagan traditions where left, some were left only because christians decided to modify them and acquire them to their selves.

To clear some things up: You have the right to believe in whatever you want, but you gave me an impression that you’re ignorant and don’t know anything at all except what you were convinced or brainwashed to believe in. So please do look into different religions, theories etc.. before jumping to a conclusion.

I've always been of the opinion that religion and spirituality can be separated and that a person possesing one does not always posses the other.

You are correct however, or at least I agree with you; religion is a crutch. It was created to give answers that people of long ago couldn't answer with their limited (or indeed nonexistent) technology. But I think whether you choose to practice it or not you gotta admit we would not be where we are now without religion and it has been and will continue to be important. I mean come on, the people of Mesopotamia didn't create the "Epic of Creation" starring Tiamat and Marduk because they were bored...

This reminds me of V (which (re)premired tonight). I don't know if anyone else saw it, but there is a pastor whose church consists of I believe a drug addict and a schitzophrenic. Then the V's show up and suddenly his church is filled with all kinds of people. Why? Because they wanted to know why the shit there were aliens parked over their city.

Personally, the idea of an all knowing/seeing dude floating in the sky is a tad hinky. I've got no problem with believing, I just choose to believe in nothing in particular.

I like the way you worded that. I agree, I'm not a very religious person, but I like to think I'm spiritual.

That's kind of an unfair generilazation, I mean even as I agree with the OP, it's kind of like a Christian forcing their beliefs on someone by saying it like this.

Not all of us are that rude. You can still respect someone while showing an opinion, I don't think he quite achieved this.

I have yet to meet an atheist that has any religious tolerance whatsoever.
And so, in the words of the atheists themselves, "Prove to me that they exist!!"
