Religion should have nothing to say in state affairs. Which includes laws.

although it makes you wonder what should govern laws..
because if what decides whether a law should be passed is popular opinion (like a public vote) then whatever is the most common ideology will govern laws

Hell, no! You shouldn't base laws on the opinion of majority. The majority is stupid, racist, homophobe, sexist, etc.
But I think there's no easy answer to the question on which you should base them instead. It's also off-topic.

Unfortunately in AMARICUH, we are still attempting to have Christianity and the Government together, even when John Adams and Ben Franklin were staunch secularists.

Even a lot of our laws are based off of Judeo-Christian morals.

Because religion is tax exempt and blahhhh blahhhh blahhh.

My first thought when I found out that the church got gay marriage banned was "It's a conspiracy, maaaannn!"
We can't have the churches making our laws.
