Russia banning emos

by xX GiRr Xx on 08-05-2008 3:59 am

Iv just been reading articles on this. Its so pathetic. Here's a short 1:

Last month the State Duma held a hearing on “Government Strategy in the Sphere of Spiritual and Ethical Education”, a piece of legislation aimed at curbing “dangerous teen trends”. There, without a clue in the world, social conservatives lumped “emos” together with skinheads, pushing for heavy regulation of emo websites and the banning of emo and goth fashion from schools and government buildings.

“The point of the bill is so that by 2020, Moscow will have someone to rule its government,” explained Alexander Grishunin, an adviser to bill sponsor Yevgeny Yuryev, apparently without irony. “This is the first step in the public discourse.”

Yuryev and his allies hope to pass the legislation before the end of the year.

Emo music emerged from Washington, DC in the mid-1980s, offering an “emotional” take on hardcore punk. The genre saw a rebirth in the late 1990s and 2000s, adopting elements of glam and goth culture, and integrating a stronger pop influence. Bands like My Chemical Romance and Dashboard Confessional hit Moscow record shops in 2003, and before long teens with dark lipstick and shoulder bags were lounging glumly at the All-Russia Exhibition Centre and Pushkin Square.

The new bill describes “emos” as 12–16 year-olds with black and pink clothing, studded belts, painted fingernails, ear and eyebrow piercings, and black hair with fringes that “cover half the face”. Emo culture’s “negative ideology” may encourage depression, social withdrawal and even suicide, the bill alleges – with young girls being particularly vulnerable.
Here i am, as perfect as i'll ever be.

thats so totally and utterly fubar. people should be able to express and dress the way they want to. thats like not letting a black person go to a school, or not letting a gay person attend church. its horrible i say, horrible. you might as well just admit youre a rednick if you make suck screwed up laws like that. i hate it, i hate it, i hate it! and btw, hw are they going to know who is actually emo? some people my look a little so called 'emo' when infact theyre not. what are they gonna do next? ban chavs, skaters, goths, hippies, lads? geez. cant people express themselves anymore?

if they are so worried about kids being suicidal then they should give parents lessons on how to take care of a child before they have kids, because the reason half these kids are suicidal are the parents/guardians fault.
or they should have a better plan of going about it then making it a law to be emo/scene...

and plus, not all emos are suicidal. im f***ing peeved at these shallow people running that stupid bluddy government. most people who are suicidal arent part of a subculture, theyre just normal. infact, arent most of suicides by the elderly? oh im getting so peeved of by the second. this is an outrage.

plus arent there more important things to worry about. bludy hell, there are kids with disabilities, a mafia, people with radioactive poisoning or whatever it was, the point is, out of all the problems, theyre trying to wipe out a group of kids? even a psychologist said that being apart of a subculture or identity can help you while in the process of growing into an adult. OMG this is so stupid this is so stupid this is so stupid this is so stupid this is so stupid this is so stupid this is so stupid this is so stupid this is so stupid this is so stupid!

Stalin would be giggling in his grave at this...

As MOST of you have already said, this "law" is preposterous. Russia has a comfortable history of outcasting people who don't fit in with the 'norm', and this is just their government doing it all over again. So much for the international right (or what SHOULD be) to freedom of expression.

I just LOVE the definition they gave of an "emo"- 12–16 year-olds with black and pink clothing, studded belts, painted fingernails, ear and eyebrow piercings, and black hair with fringes that “cover half the face”. They forgot to include, you know, the people who are outside of this age group, the fact that neon colours are now also being reflected in the clothing and hair... and that the majority... you know, it doesn't matter. Essentially, this is a ridiculous attempt at controlling the surroundings and subjecting people to conformism.

It's pathetic that there's nothing to be done about it. *le sigh*
