First, I undertand that EB is butt ugly and is put together like a 60 year old prostitute with one leg. EB was originally only designed to be a picture hosting website, so I than added a forum and moved the user database to the forum. The forum and the picture gallery still had to play nice, which causes all sorts of fun issues. I can think of a 100 ways the site could have been built better off the top of my head, but I didn't have an idea of what direction this site would end up taking. So it was done the way it was done.
One of the amazing things about the software that EB runs on is that it is all hacked together like a honda civic built from mitsubishi parts. That means that everything is a pain in the ass to work on. To redesign the site, I have to write 3 seperate CSS stylesheets, modify 100's of templates (for those familiar with smarty), and waste a whole lot of time. It is as fun as it sounds.
The basic point here is that EB was never intended to grow as large as it did. There's no caching in the gallery, and with the thousands and thousands of pageviews it generates every day, that's a hell of a lot of computer usage. I can admit the site pisses me off every time I look at it. It's like that emo kid you never wanted, but it's too late to abort it. And now that it's too late to abort it, being the parent of the site, I've found that I love emobucket deep down inside, even if I beat it and call it names.
Here's something interesting about me that many of you know. I'm fucking lazy. I also run a web design business, and have a lot of other personal websites that need attention. That means for a lazy person I'm working way past my quota in life. I would be content being homeless, but alas I have to keep EB alive, and I can't do that being homeless.
EB does deserve to be redesigned and upgraded before 2010, and I will start working on something. You can post your suggestions here, and I will read them this time.. If anyone ever needs to get a hold of me, my numbers are posted in the mod forum. There is also support@emobucket.com, just put a good title, like "Advertising Inquiry", and your guaranteed that I will read it. I'm probably going to be disappearing again as I start working on the new design of emobucket.
Also, I never just disappeared from Emo Bucket, I still had to check the server load every day and make sure the site was still up and running
