Meanie.
You saying I'm not normal? D:<

Reading this discussion, this question popped in my head: What is "normal" to you?

Why do people want to be considered normal, but not unique/whatever?
Are there actually normal people?
Can it be defined?

Discuss.

Everyone's different, so there is no "normal", but if I had to define it I would say being normal is staying within what is socially acceptable in a given situation.

Being normal doesn't exclude being unique. Being unique IS normal.

Normal is what is true for most people.
For example illnesses are not normal (they are also not "cool", but that's another issue): being anorexic is not normal. Cutting is not normal. Severe drug abuse is not normal. Depression is not normal.
And as I have said: being unique is normal. Everyone is different from the others, individuality is normal - to a certain degree.
If a person is "not normal", it is only in one or few aspects. If normality wouldn't exist, daily life would be near impossible. Members of mensa for example might not be normal concerning intelligence - but most of them will have their heart, liver, etc in their normal places. Without most people being normal there would be no medicine (imagine the doctors having to search through your whole body if they have to remove your appendix), no mass-production of goods (and before you say that's good, think again: do you really want your car, your chair, your computermouse, your table, etc handmade for you - and can you pay that?), no public transport, etc.
Sometimes not being normal is good, sometimes it's ok and sometimes it's bad. There is nothing wrong with being normal.

Why are scene kids so obsessed with not wanting to be normal? Do you think it makes you a better human?
Why are we so obsessed with superlatives? Why does no one want to lead a normal, average life anymore (though most of us will)?

For me, normal is that middle class family that has a couple of kids, the kids go to school, the parents have jobs, and life is what you simply coast through.

People want to be normal because, when you're not normal, there isn't anyone to relate to.
When you are 'normal', there are plenty of people to relate to.
It's to nix loneliness.

normal doesn't exist for me.
There's not enough of one type of person to make a "norm"
everyone is different in some way - which also means no one is.
So in some way, aren't we all kind of "normal"?

No one is normal because normal would be perfect, and is anyone perfect?

No.
Basically everyone has a different definition of normal. Even something that's considered the "universal normal", there are things people don't tell you & things you won't know about them.

Normal can go screw a kangaroo.
I like being out of the ordinary, because it shows that I'm not caught up in some popularity contest.
I'm NOT saying people who try to be normal are conceited and vain.
But people where I live are. They fail.

i would have to say i agree with L's post.
most people are normal, I myself am pretty normal.

although parts me are different (my ribcage is deformed, i dress unusually, different music tastes to people my own age), if i didnt have these things i wouldnt be any different from the next person.

although in another context, being normal could be seen as simply living inside the social norms.

I agree with Flowmo.

Normal is what's socially acceptable.

People want to be normal because they don't want to deal with the oppression of being different.
