Death over a girl is something a melodramatic teenager or a genuinely in love couple come up with, not a young adult who should just be finding his feet...
He sounds like he needs to make friends, get out a bit more...try introducing him to your friends, people you know and think he might get on with...
His mom walking out shouldnt really mean no-one understands him, it hapens to more people than you realise...

TL;DR: Find him friends, back off a little but still be there, convince him this girl isnt the end of everything...chances are, if they did get together, they would split after a few weeks/months...
