A Very Basic Guide to: Punk

A Very Basic Guide to: Punk

by Kakashicon on 08-16-2009 1:36 pm

The reason why I have started this thread is because many people confuse what punk is and therefore will clear it up.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The punk subculture is a subculture based around punk rock. It includes music, ideologies, fashion, visual art, dance, literature and film. The punk scene is composed of an assortment of smaller factions that distinguish themselves from one another through unique variations. Several of these factions have developed out of punk to become subcultures in their own right.

This is true!!!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ideologies
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Most Punks are liberal which some are anarchist, anti-establishment and other beliefs. They also come with anti-sexism, anti-racism and other anti-discriminatory beliefs along with this anti-corporate/DIY/Non-conformist or not selling out virtues. There are a few that are conservative like Nazi punk, skinhead punk, the rest are apolitical (meaning no politics). This is often found in music.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fashion
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Most of the Punk scene lives to have extreme (no good words come to mind) clothing, with safety pins, Mohawks, multiple piercings, ties, spikes and studs, bright colors, makeup, tattoos and other "extreme" things. Some are anti-fashion claiming that punk should be based off of ideologies and music while some just don't go elaborate.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Literature
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Punks have mostly zines, propaganda, and a few books that they read. Many of them are political.
Punk has generated a considerable amount of poetry and prose. Punk has its own underground press in the form of punk zines, which feature news, gossip, cultural criticism, and interviews. Some zines take the form of perzines. Important punk zines include Maximum RocknRoll, Punk Planet, Cometbus, and Search & Destroy . Several novels, biographies, autobiographies, and comic books have been written about punk. Love and Rockets is a notable comic with a plot involving the Los Angeles punk scene.

Examples of punk poets include: Richard Hell, Jim Carroll, Patti Smith, John Cooper Clarke, Seething Wells, Raegan Butcher, and Attila the Stockbroker. The Medway Poets performance group included punk musician Billy Childish and had an influence on Tracey Emin. Jim Carroll's autobiographical works are among the first known examples of punk literature. The punk subculture has inspired the cyberpunk and steampunk literature genres.
Wikipedia
Many zines are now dead due to the decline of punk and how sucky it is these days.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Music
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the most controversial part of punk that people often get confused or mistaken.

There are many Different Kinds of punk Like:
Pop Punk
Punk
Punk rock
Horror Punk
and others
Many of which have music that is different from another type.
Many People think that punk rock came in different waves and every band within a time period is in the same genre.
This is not completely true, yes punk came in waves however not every band was in the same genre.
Pop Punk is punk. A Great example of Pop Punk is Green Day, which the older stuff was more punk and the newer stuff was closer to rock. Anti-flag is punk because before they were punk rock that was political and now is pop punk. The basic thing about punk is that it has lots of energy, rage (or love most of the time), has solos, riffs and other things.

Yeah what ninage said. There are like only a couple thousand readers at most. Most of the time local. However some zines (like mine) aren't local and only get like 10 readers. Want to read some? Here is a link to some free zines. www.zinelibrary.info
and some Flipside issues are on the internet. So is 10 things Jesus wants you to know, Maximum Rock and roll (I think) and there are others.
