A Basic Guide to Emotional Hardcore

Okay, to find if something is emo or screamo, you can just check any of the list of bands at the beginning of this thread, and if your music is similar to that, it has a chance of being in the emo or screamo genre. (Or it's just punk or hardcore-punk)

Can you prove me wrong?
Or do i have to lay a bunch of smackdown of theory on this place?
In all honesty I really think eb is an intelligent place, but there defenitions and attitude are fairly.. elitist..

P.S.S: I just saw what you said but dont you say most indie are progressive any band can be progressive progressive is more along the lines of a term to describe a band that uses odd time signatures, and utilize complex song forms..(The same could be said for experimental not nessicarily a genre but a term to describe)

Well, it depends on what you would define as "Indie", "Experimental", or "Progressive".

I apologize, I'm not trying to sound elitist, I'm really not, but I just want you to know that emotional hardcore is not usually a mainstream genre, and stuff you wouldn't normally find on youtube, such as "Vanna" or "Texas is the Reason"

They are pretty different from the real Emotional Hardcore that you'd see on the list, the bands that you're listing have more of an "Indie" feel (if that's what you'd call it), and Post-Hardcore

Well you have to understand with an "indie feel" but have been heavily influenced by emo bands look at a riff from Rites of Spring and then look at a riff by texas is the reason, you can see the influence is HEAVY, then as we move along we get bands like hawthorne heights who are.. somewhat emo.. Then you have bands like my chem and it gets all wtfzzors, that is nothing like emo...

But dont worry im not offended I find you to be extremely intelligent(:

But I will agree with you on the fact that a lot of the music you posted MIGHT have emo/screamo influences(such as Thursday has a LOT of screamo influences, such as Envy, as evident in their Split and Geoff's side-based screamo project, United Nations), but that doesn't necessarily make them emo/screamo.

A lot of modern music might have been influenced by bands such as bands like Rites of Spring and Moss Icon, maybe such as Get Up Kids, EARLY Jimmy Eats World, etc. But it just annoys me that things like Alternative Press are calling every band that pops up "Screamo" (they called Silverstein this) or "Emo"(They call Coheed and Cambria and Fall Out Boy this), and these bands weren't even influenced by screamo or emo bands, simply hardcore or even early hardcore-punk.

But I'll repeat your compliment back at you, and you are an extremely intelligent individual, especially when it comes to knowing your music, and quite the formidable opponent in a debate ^^

Not much else I can say but I do agree the media has bastardized emo, labeling bands such as FOB, P!ATD, MCR as emo is foolish there are some excuses, but such blatent ones are so stupid they call bands like a7x emo(Then again that could jsut be metal elitism)

I was just thinking. It's funny how people have bestowed the genre of emo upon AFI since 2006 (maybe 2003) when really, they were closest to touching on the genre was actually 15 years prior when they initiated a DIY hardcore punk band. I also recall in their early days (1996-ish) they used to play at a bar called "Emos".It was only in maybe 2003 they abandoned the punk element and that's where the emo label started creeping up.

man,i loved early AFI. But i don't think they changed into emo or were really ever emo.
They progressed into a poppier sound though. Not really a fan of their newer stuff.

Music can be mainstream and still be the same genre, say out of nowhere City of Catapillars gets famous, they would still be emo. A genre is a sound not a popularity contest.
Unless I interpreted that incorrectly, and is this a modern emo band?

The thing is City of Caterpillars won't get famous its the way it is. No, vanna is not in anyway or form emo howeve Texas IS the Reason is Post-emo.
