If the number of chromosomes was the sole determinant of specie and genus, then it would be relatively simple to mutate any animal into a totally different creature, children with down syndrome, which is the result of either a missing or superfluous chromosome, would look like gorilla hybrids, and horses would be the superior species, having 72 chromosome pairs. It's a loose theory, based on a simplistic view of genetics. I don't claim to be an expert on this subject, being only an economics major, but my girlfriend, a biology major, supports my view. The human genome is way too complicated and interdependent within itself to be explained with numbers alone.

It a social taboo. The reason why it's such a social taboo is because of biology bascially. Humans want to create the best children so that the species can continue. It's basically instinct in us that says that we can't have the best children to keep the species going if we procreate with our relatives.

That's mostly why incest is considered wrong, and why the bicycle was the best thing to ever happen to Eurpoe and Asia. It allowed easier travel outside of your own village so you didn't have to resort to incest to continue the family.

Technically that isn't incest, but inbreeding. The inbreeding in the British royal family is likely to have caused the haemophilia which has struck through the family for a hundred years.
One generation of inbreeding isn't likely to cause any major deformities, it's when it's continuously done over several generations that serious problems start to emerge, just look at some of the pedigree dogs; the ridiculous standards of what a "purebreed" means that dogs have been breed with very close relatives over a long period of time and has lead to certain breeds with skulls too small for their brains and others which can no longer mate without human assistance, or give birth naturally.
