Between Disney and the Brothers Grimm Fairy tales have been ruined. the original versions of most fairy tales are violent, and are full of rape and mutilation.
There is no such thing as happily ever after.
Sleeping Beauty
She wasn't woken by a kiss. There was no prince either. She for a splinter under the nail that made her death-like. It was a King who found her, and raped her, and left her for dead. She didn't die, she got preggers, and was awoken by her baby sucking on her finger (it sucked the splinter out from under her nail). The King came back and took her home with him, but his wife didn't like the mistress and bastard moving in, and so ordered them to be murdered.
Little Red Riding Hood
There was no wood cutter. The story ends with the wolf eating her.
In some versions he convinces her to remove her clothes, then he rapes her, then eats her.
The Little Mermaid
She is able come on land to be with the prince if she drinks a potion that makes it feel like she is walking on knives at all times. She does, and you would expect her selfless act to end with the two of them getting married. Nope. The prince marries a different woman, and the Little Mermaid throws herself into the sea, where her body dissolves into sea foam.
There are many, many more older versions, of many other tales.

I loved the scary fairy tales.
They didn't freak me out to badly either, and I ended up falling inlove with them.
There where some variations of the story of Little Red Riding Hood where the wolf
and the huntsman where the same person. (The red of her cloak was met to represent her change into a woman, and the wolf was met to be how horny men 'preyed' on girls.
Thus the 'huntsman' who rescued her from the cabin was really the wolf, just in a better light or something.)

I much prefer these versions to the Disney versions.
