What emo means in my area

Everyone used to point at me and yell out EMO GO CUT YOURSELF in the hallways at school every day but now they've gotten used to me being around and they know that I'm not bothered by what they say so they stopped and are slightly ore friendly towards me.

same things happened to me for a while pretty much. i still sometimes get some kid yelling "emo fag" as I walk by. what ever though, don't care much. there was a kid today wearing a shirt that said "anti-emo army" at the top then at the bottom "WARNING" hahaha. lols.

people here think it's a kid that has longish bangs, and not baggy pants. they don't even have to be skinny jeans. since there are few scene kids here, people will call anything emo.

In English class, we've been reading the novel "Romeo and Juliet", a book about crazed love and suicide- a very stereotypically "emo" subject. So, as you guessed it- the word "emo" is used the most then. NO ONE KNOWS WHAT THE WORD EMO MEANS IN MY AREA- and no one respects it. Their knowledge of the word goes as far as word-of-mouth.

Onto the specifics: Today, in class, possibly the worst predicament involving the word "emo" occurred: we were talking about a character who spoke in a very depressive manor and wanted to kill himself, and one student (the usual) shouted "EMO!", a girl next to me then shouted "EMO!" then a few other students carried on the chant "EMO!!!!!!!!!" until the teacher actually said "okay, he was very EMO".

This sickens me in every way possible.

-There is alot more to be added to this thread that I cannot add now, since a storm is coming, which will surely cause a power-outage.

Razz We are being MADE to read that book too, and we we're talking about how Romeo was depressed. One person said "So, he is emo Miss!!?? "
And our teacher just said "Yes, he has pretty much gone emo!"

it's like that in my country too .......pah... ppl mistake me a lot for being EMO cuz i dont talk , i dont socialize, my hair is always in my face and i am known for being one of the "rock freaks" (term i HATE) of my school....my friends they are punk...now they turned emo....because they say " emo is like you anix! youre not hardcore...youre emo..." i go why? where you get that idea???
apparantly im emo cause

i used to pour hot candle wax and give my self minor burns.....a form of self mutilation

i wear black.....

i dont talk

...........WTF!?!?!?! i mean i accept the ppl in the scene we are all human ...and emo is alright .....what i do hate is that it is becoming a sterotype now and even though im not emo i can understand where you guys are comming from....i have a pal who's goth and they thought she was EMO ....this just shows to PROVE HOW DUMB PPL REALLY ARE....by that i mean ppl who have no idea what its all about....i dont mind being called emo...im using it as an exam ple to show how dumb ppl are

In my school, emo is a "type". To them the music has nothing to do with the person. Since I don't talk much to some people they call me emo and stuff and ask if I cut. It's just like to them that if you don't wear the stuff they do and listen to their music then you're goth, emo, etc. It's so stupid. People are who they are!

the school i used to go to was all black and hispanic, so they weren't sure what "emo" was until i introduced it to them. emo/scene is obviously not their kind of culture or sub-genre/style. that's when the question kicked in if i was emo or not. so, then i had to explain to them what scene was. they still don't entirely understand it, but they know a general idea of what it is. after i told them though, they started saying, "oh, that's emo," or.. "oh, you're so emo." they said it as though they were pointing it out, not as if they were making fun of it.

but i think emo/scene means different things to people in different places. emo/scene is often more accepted in a place that has a lot of different varieties of people, like new york city, than the suburbs.
