Poem guide

by InnocentDemon on 07-14-2008 5:24 pm

Most of the poems in this forum have been completely free form, without structure, rhyme or rhythm. These may be heartfelt and dramatic but if you really want to show off your poetic skills try writing format.

Here are some types of poetry.

Haiku
5 syllables
7 syllables
5 syllables

Haikus do not rhyme
They are simplistic in form
with only 3 lines.

Limerick
A - / - - / - - / -
A - / - - / - - / -
B - / - - /
B - / - - /
A - / - - / - - / -

Generally used in humorous context the Limerick has 5 lines making use of an AABBA rhyming pattern A lines rhyme with other A lines and B lines rhyme with other B lines. The slashes indicate the placement of stress upon syllables. There can be more or fewer syllables in a line but they should follow that general pattern.

Italian Sonnet

A
B

C
D
E

D
E

The first 2 stanza are called the octave and usually (but not always) ask a question the last stanza is the sextet which answers the question. There are variations to this form. Such as an octave of ABAB ABAB, or a sextet of CDCCDC or CDCDCD.

This will be updated with more poetry forms later.

I think it's unfair to say that one must use some sort of rhyme or rhythm to show talent.

Well yeah. It is also unfair to read classics and let beauty flow unto your works while others just bash their keyboards with their angsty feelings.

Most people write free verse, or simple rhyme scheme.
Its called poetic liscence. basically you can write anything and it's considered art.

I write prose poetry ( http://forum.emobucket.com/my-love-my-burden-prose-poem-t28054.html ) and while some beg to differ whether it is a genre of poetry it's seen as a great alternative genre for those who don't have rhythm or rhyme.
Perhaps when you add more styles this style could be included?
