What is conformity? Isn't it "following the crowd" ? So, since the crowd has fingers, I guess I should cut off mine. To truly non-conform, you have to do whatever and not care about anything else. But then people would start to follow you. No one is original. Everything about you is just bits and pieces of other things. All of your ideas are based on something, even the spontaneous ones. We are not unique, no matter how hard we try to be. Even if we aren't "following the crowd", we all still buy the same things, think the same things, feel the same(etc.) as someone else. Isn't it lovely?
I don't want to be that little girl with no fingers, skin or eyes.
No blood, no feelings, no wants, no needs.
No brain, no cells, no voice, no say.
I don't want to be the one cursed with the pleasure of being different.
Non-conformity.

Yes and no. You're born with fingers. I believe when someone says they're not going to conform, what they're actually saying is that they will not take any active steps in their lives to be fit into the mold that has been prescribed as healthy or normal. You passively, not actively, have fingers.
Though I agree with your premise. Kudos.

You can't change the way your boy works, however, you can make your own choices.
Your description of 'conformity' is incorrect.

Conformity can have either good or bad effects on people, from driving safely on the correct side of the road, to harmful drug or alcohol abuse.
Conformity is a group dynamic. Numerous factors, such as unanimity, cohesion, status, prior commitment and public opinion all help to determine the level of conformity an individual will reflect towards his or her group. Conformity influences the formation and maintenance of social norms.

you should just do what you want to do and be who you want to be. i hate it when people A)change themselves to fit into the social norms, or B)change themselves so they aren't doing anything that could even be considered a social norm. it's all so childish. it's either, "look at me, i'm just like everyone else!!!!" or "look at me, i'm so radically different!" STUPIDITY. trying to be non-conformist, in the way i described, is just as bad as actually conforming. people are way too concerned with their image.

i dreamed of a walrus
eating little kids
and then i felt guilty
for what that walrus did
so now i stay awake all night
because if i should go to sleep
that walrus might just get fed up
and then try to eat me.

This is good.
The word 'cool' always interested me. It was originally used to describe people with just that temprement, those who were quiet and did their own thing, regardless of the 'standard' behaviours of the time. Eg James Dean.
Nowadays the term cool has been flipped around. We use it to describe preening movie stars who strike poses and sulk, who jump on the latest diet band-wagon, and who do whatever it takes to stay in the spotlight.
Who do we have nowadays who is 'cool' in the true sense of the word?
Jarvis Cocker. Sad but true.

I understand and appreciate your comments. This was the idea for a poem I was going to write, which is why the idea of non-conformity is taken to an extreme. To make it a bit more clear as to what I was saying: conformity is not a materialistic thing. It is an idea of being like everyone else, and for those trying to rebell, they are just fitting into a huge social collection of people who are also trying to rebell, thus destroying the whole purpose of being different from everyone else.
Everyone has similar qualities to others and make the same choices as others, meaning that we all conform without even realizing it.

I thought I was a non-conformist because I was a hypocrite but apparently it's the cool thing to do now.
