How To Get This Look: Raccoon Eyes

by HelloKatie on 04-12-2008 3:23 am

Alright, so we have all seen the pictures of the girls who have their eyes painted all black, and you may have thought to yourself... Hmm, how do I do that?? I'm here to help you out. If this is the look your trying to achieve with your eye makeup, then read on my friends... Laughing

(Bottom Picture = Me Very Happy )

This is a really easy look to achieve if you're not so bad with makeup. But if you're new to doing something like this, do NOT get discouraged if it turns out wrong the first few times. This takes trial and error for everyone. =)

Some things you'll need to get this look are:
A good, smooth eyeliner pencil.
Good black eyeshadow.
Mascara.
Faux eyelashes. (optional)

01. Products

Any BLACK eyeliner pencil will work. Liquid eyeliner is NOT recommended for this look.
For the eyeshadow, I recommend a good brand such as MAC. MAC Carbon is a solid black, high-pigment matte shadow that will work the best with this look. I DON'T recommend store brand shadow such as Maybelline. Most of the time it comes up too light and multiple layers of shadow are needed. But, use whatever you can get.
Mascara isn't all that important here. But it's recommended that you use it. You can just use whatever you have lying around.

02. Application

First, apply your mascara to both the top AND bottom lashes. Apply this first so that if you get any on your skin around the eye, you can wipe it off before continuing. Wait for the mascara to dry before you continue.

Next, take your pencil liner and put a thin line across your top eye lid, just along the eyelash. Try to get as close as you can. Neatness is not too necessary here as you will be putting eyeshadow on top of it. The reason for this line is to fill in any of the creases along the eyelash that the shadow may not be able to get.
Then, without poking yourself in the eye, take your pencil liner and along the inside of your bottom eye lid, apply the liner. (yes, the inside, right above your bottom lashes). This can be a very difficult step to people who are new to it. Your eyes may water obscenely, lol. That's ok, it's normal. It just takes some time to get use to.
After you have applied the liner to the inside of you bottom lid, take the liner and just along the bottom, make a thick line under your eye and lashes. This is your desired thickness... It can be as thick or as thin as you want it to be.
Don't forget to make the liner from the top eye lid and the bottom eye lid meet at the ends of your eye. You're not trying to make it pointy or anything, you just want to make sure they meet up.

Next is the shadow (we come back to the liner later...). This is the easy part. Take your black eyeshadow and whatever you're using to apply it with (Q-tip or applicator brush), and just start to cover your top eye lid with it. Go a little higher then your eye lid towards your eyebrow also. This is where YOUR experimenting comes in. You can play around with the style of the eyeshadow... Like how high up you want it and how far out you want it to flare, or if you even want it to flare at all. There are a lot of options. It all depends on your personal taste. Just make sure your shadow is dark enought to cover the liner on your top lid.

The next thing you going to do (this is optional, but it tends to make the style closer to what you're looking for...) is take a small amount of eyeshadow and apply it over top of the eyeliner underneath of your eye. You don't want to over do it, and a little should be just enough. This step should flare it out and make it look closer to the liner in the picture. Use desired amount.

And the final step is to apply your eyeliner along the inside corners of your eye. After you do this, you can also flare it out a little by using the eyeshadow technique mentioned in the last step. Be careful not to poke yourself in the eye!

03. Optional Step: Faux Eyelashes

You may use what ever eyelashes you perfer. Always apply after you finish your makeup. Follow the instructions that come along with the eyelashes and adhesive for application.

04. Your Result

Your finished result should look somewhat like whats in the picture. It probably won't look exactly the same, but you get the general idea now.

You will probably not get this right on your first try, but don't be discouraged if it looks like shit. It takes time and practice to achieve this look. Keep trying and don't give up till your happy with the ending result! Very Happy

Good luck and have fun! I hope I helped.

Gorgeous eyes. Not alot of people pull it off though.I was looking through my little sister's yearbook and saw
this grade eight who tried to pull it off and failed.. MISERABLY Neutral

But if you can pull it off, (and do it right) it looks really good XD

The rest of me didn't look good though. It's time for some eyebrow waxing.

as for getting the makeup off, i highly reccomend

1. put lotion on a cotton swab
2. swipe it across your eyelid, this should get most of it off
3. take a stridex pad and dab around to get the rest off

how bout no. lol
who puts lotion on their eyes?!
that's dangerous.
Just use soap and water.
trust me, it works.

no, you just use gentle, unscented, non-irritating lotion. it helps to get it most of it off, and if you accidentally get it in your eye, it won't hurt.

i read it in 17, and tried it. it works

I use some "eye make up remover". It hurts when you get it in your eye though.

This is harder than you think. I ended up looking like a clown the first three times I tried. Then I tried dark gray shadow instead of black and it looked much better, because I am very pale.

Good tutorial!

(I think an "eye make up remover" is the best for washing it all off. Soap can easily dry out your skin and make it irritated. )
