At my school, I usually hear the word "emo" used in in a derogatory manor- usually about three times a day. In English class, we've been reading the novel "Romeo and Juliet", a book about crazed love and suicide- a very stereotypically "emo" subject. So, as you guessed it- the word "emo" is used the most then. NO ONE KNOWS WHAT THE WORD EMO MEANS IN MY AREA- and no one respects it. Their knowledge of the word goes as far as word-of-mouth.

Onto the specifics: Today, in class, possibly the worst predicament involving the word "emo" occurred: we were talking about a character who spoke in a very depressive manor and wanted to kill himself, and one student (the usual) shouted "EMO!", a girl next to me then shouted "EMO!" then a few other students carried on the chant "EMO!!!!!!!!!" until the teacher actually said "okay, he was very EMO".

This sickens me in every way possible.

In my area it is the kids that listen to emocore
it is also used as derogatory term as well
I must agree emo being used as a derogative term is epic failure cause they cant come up with anything else.

i hate people like that. and i hear it too. they are disrespectful.

most ppl here judge it by the way you dress and act, which i guess is right in some opinions,

ppl where i live think if your not happy 24/7 and you don't listen to pop/rap and your hair isnt in a pony tail then your automatically emo.they all use it the word emo in a bad way and i hate it!

Its used in a derogatory way here too but not so much anymore. Everyone used to point at me and yell out EMO GO CUT YOURSELF in the hallways at school every day but now they've gotten used to me being around and they know that I'm not bothered by what they say so they stopped and are slightly ore friendly towards me.

Down here, emo refers to 2 types of person. One is your typical black eyeliner, tight jeans and tight band t-shirts wearing emo (although they are usually called pop-punkers, goth or some other wrongly mistaken subculture. Emo is not that common here.) The other type is used to refer to a sad, lonely or heart-broken person usually with no relations to the music or people following the fashion or the subculture.

The 2nd definition being more common here.

People cannot be emo. If people call you emo, they are too stupid to be insulting you. If you think you are emo, you need to read the stickies.

ppl in my area think emos cut and wat not it finally anoyed me. so i explained to one of the preps in my school that emo is a type of music and the anoying emo calling thing stopped for the most part. preps are so dumb lol.

In my class emo means, cutting yourself 'till you die. I sure hate my class!
