even carroll was better than him... sure, tell that to your english teacher. she would know.

Last year: spent 4 months on Poes life..another 3 on his works..."annablelee" "the Raven" "the Mask of the Red death" and a few others
This year:
Spent 2 months on his life..2 months on more of his works...

Ive also read his poems on my own..I do know what I am talkinging about..

many of his works have one or more of the follow basic elements:
1)the person is mentally unstable
2)they have a problem, that they just make worse..
3)the featured person or main secondary figure dies
4)^causeing the other to plung into a dark state...
5)they narrator spends his who time weeping and whinning about one thing or another..

It gets old and boring quickly...just because he os considered the best of american romanticism doesnt make his work good or great...

He was Manic-Depressive..lots of other poets are-where too.

I just think that people need to get over the great "tradjic" life of a pretty boring poet....who was unsuccesful in life..
Poe didnt contribute to much to human life..
between his Gambleing, drinking and depression he didnt do a lot...

as expected, you mostly concentrated on his more popular poems, which convinced you that he is all about macabre and despair (as evident with the list you enumerated). not all his stories have that trait, and not all his works are stories even. some are critical essays on literary fiction (which, in my opinion, is excellently delivered), and some of his fiction are satiric and humorous in nature.

the character's despair is a given in his story, but he effectively constructs a plot around it that employed several elements still followed to this day. in short, he was as inventive as edison, though in a literary sense (even Lovecraft and Machen looked up to the man. they simply owed their techniques to the master who introduced what real horror writing is).

Poe contributed the genre of detective fiction to the world. remember auguste dupin and his hunt for an ape? remember his noble denial of a financial reward? his brilliant solution to the mystery of the purloined letter? all of these became classics of the detective genre and has went on to become the inspiration of Doyle and Christie to write their own respective fiction. are we even to mention the short story, a style pioneered by Poe?

when you say that people want Poe because of the mystery and tragedy of his life is very shallow. you must have spoken from the current teenager's perspective of his works, glorifying death on his Raven and emphasizing the hurt and longing in Annabel Lee. it's all superficial. they don't see the elegant execution of language, only the 'dark' nature of the poem which they feel they can identify with.

in the end, all is subjective in literature. but to dismiss someone established as having no contribution or talent whatsover is very narrow thinking.

Awesomest poem ever.

Jack and Jill went up the hill
To get some marijuana
Jack got high, unzipped his fly
And said Jill do you wanna?
Jill said yes, unzipped her dress,
And then they had some fun.
Silly Jill forgot the pill
And nine months later had a son.

My favorite poet is Robert Frost. Fav. quote: In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on.

Why has no one mentioned TS Eliot yet?

Love him. And I don't generally go in for poetry.

I saw someone mention Seamus Heaney back a bit, don't really like him I'm afraid. But we always get spiteful when one of us achieves success, so I don't know.

I love 'The Raven.' It is absolutely the greatest poem I have ever read, closely, VERY closely followed by 'The Cremation of Sam McGee.' As can be evident in my favorite poem, Edgar Allen Poe is my favorite poet, but is, too, a close second as my favorite literary master, not only for his poems, but his short stories.
