Forgive me for being an idiot, but what is a poser exactly? My friends and I call each other it as jokes, though I've never really understood what it meant.

it's ok, it's not that easy to define and the definition varies. usually, posers are people who completely fails to understand the chosen subculture/style they claim they belong to. be it in clothing or understanding of the actual purpose of the style. someone who's trying really hard to fit in, but without success. as the term suggests, it's someone who has to >pose< to feel confident in his or her 'choosen' style.

typical poser-behaviours includes:
*overdressing, overdone make-up etc (no real confidence in the style).
*telling everyone what style you belong to (a real emo/goth/punk won't have to imply his/her style to anyone).
*joined style because of 'wrong' reasons, i.e. to be cool, popular or because of your best friend (not because of the associated music or the philosphy of the style).
*chooses clothing simply because "it's emo to wear", whether the clothes fit or not.
*misunderstands the purpose of the style. ex: believing emo is about cutting yourself - ("I cut myself badly, so I'm emo").

of course it's impossible to write "the one-and-only-true definition" of a style/subculture, but I feel someone has to try when it comes to emo/scene ^^ I bet very few goths, punks and ravers cares this much about the 'true definition' of >their< style. the reason to why I (and many others) care about the definition of this style is because I believe it to be one of the most misunderstood and abused of all subcultures.

Sure, there are kids who use it for attention, and some of those kids have not real problem. like, gives themselves a paper cut then run off and show their friends. That's dumb. But some kids have a real problem.
You can't be 100% ignorant just 'cause some kids make it seem like not a problem.

you're right about the cutting too. but I'm not ignorant. what I mean is that only poser kids make the connection between emo and cutting
("I cut myself, I'm so emo"). of course, self-mutilation is a real problem for many, and it shouldn't be ignored as a serious problem for these people. however, self-harming should NEVER be associated with this subculture. that's just feeding the media what they want to hear (those of you who saw that news report know what I'm talking about ><).

Although self-harming shouldn't be associated with a subculture, it is. And that's what makes it thrive.
Hell, there was a time where I cut myself only because it sounded pretty in songs+emo friends. I wanted to be emo, thus SHimg.
I'm not saying I was right in anyway, but no matter what this stuff happens. SHing is tons more popular now, and I think it's safe to say it's because of the emo fad. Whether it's because of kids wanting to be emo so they cut themselves, or because they are in this emo depression because of the fad and start to develop a real problem [or both].
And sometimes problems such as self-harming [not just cutting] like anorexia is started because of media and so on.
Although I don't agree with it, but because of the rising popularity of both 'emo' and cutting, within our generation they will be associated as one in the same. Nothing will change that.

If everything thing you say about being a poseur is true. Than I am one.... but don't you think that most have to start out being "a poseur"? How can you learn what it is to be emo if you aren't a poseur first. I thought being emo meant you liked the style of music, dressed scene, and that you were a deeper or more philosophically thinking person.

So does that make me a poseur???
