Somewhat.
Theres a major difference between pop, punk, or pop punk, and emo.
Birds of a feather; screw the middle class all together.

I agree with Opal.
Many people seem to think Fall Out Boy fits in with bands like Good Charlotte and Simple Plan.

The older Fall Out Boy stuff is actually pretty good, in my opinion.
At least the band doesn't use that predominant major key tonality sound that Simple Plan and Good Charlotte use.

It's easier to distinguish different songs from FoB than the other two, because at least they sound somewhat different, and have slightly more complex song structure.

FoB has a bad rap, and I don't really like that. Not saying I'm a fan, but they've definitely got a couple good tunes that they deserve some credit for.

To answer your question, however, I would say Pop-Punk is a rip off of Post-Emo, (bands like Jimmy Eat World, and Blink 182).

I think pop-punk is simply a pussy attempt to be punk but also be mainstream.

it mixes a good genre that is known by the public (even if they have no actual clue of what real punk is) and mix it with a mainstream genre which is the shitbomb called pop.

the result is a dead smelly child of the two that shouldnt have survived the abortion.

Now you DO know that "pop" is short for "popular"....

Right?

It's not exactly a genre...

Thats like saying RnB isnt a genre because its short for rhythm and blues.

it amounts to the same thing.

It's nothing like that...

R&B is Blues (which IS a genre) combined with rhythm. Pretty self explanatory.

"Pop" however, can be spread out over many many genres, depending on which genre is popular at the time.

Kapeesh?

I see your point but really.
Alot of bands are popular, but that doesn't mean that you'd associate them with pop.

If theres no such genre as pop how do you explain artist like The Veronicas, Miley Cyrus or Avril Lavigne?

Haha i totally forgot about good charlotte. i wonder what happened to them. I think that pop-punk is just artists who combine the two mainstreams hoping to make sometime cool. sometimes they succeed but other times they fall on their face miserably.

"pop punk" isn't ripped off of emo, but its a really generic and unoriginal genre.

Its nothing like punk.
Punk (atleast the first wave) was all about anger and energy and going against the mainstream,
but pop punk is basically just pop that tries to sound like punk.

The name of pop punk is a complete oxymoron,
how can something be pop and punk at the some time?
They're polar opposites.

If you listen to a simple plan song, it really doesnt sound much different than a jonas brothers song.
Does it?
Its produced, whiny, and it sounds like every other lame band you hear on the radio.
