Atheists of the forums

by curiousgeorge on 10-20-2009 6:13 pm

It's becoming increasingly popular to attack religions of different kinds on these boards. And it's really not cool. Way back when, it seemed like it was possible to have a reasoned, civil discussion about the viability of theology vs atheism, with due respect being reserved for both parties. Nowadays, the stalwart Christians like Pope and Classicfall have left, and all that remains is a clavacade of religion-bashers. You guys create thread after thread of thinly-veiled swipes against religion, and constantly retread the same old ground. We've an official religion thread, a religion vs science thread, a belief in the afterlife thread, and another thread where the OP calls people idiots for believing in God. All on the first page of serious discussions.

It's a pity to see that atheism has become the latest trend jumped upon by scene kiddies to make themselves look dark and cool, but what's more disappointing is the trollish nature of the remarks that people come out with. It's a favourite saying of atheists that 'religious people shove their beliefs down my throat'. But look around the forum and see how far back that pendulum has swung.

People make a big song and dance about 'tolerance' on this board: be it 'tolerance' for scene kids, 'tolerance' for music tastes, 'tolerance' of eating disorders and self harm, 'tolerance' of homosexuals or bisexuals. But it's the height of hypocrasy when people who demand such tolerance spin round and denigrate the beliefs of people with such callousness. If they aren't actively pushing their beliefs on you, leave them alone. Going looking for someone to argue with by posting inflammatory threads only reveals you as being unconfident in your own standpoint.

One last thing that I've said before: Atheists think themselves superior because they believe in logic and evidence, not tradition or belief. They denounce the idea of God because there is no real evidence for him, and the church has been proven wrong on such issues as evolution. But the boundaries of cosmology don't let us see past the Big Bang. We still don't know how abiogenesis came about. Until we know these things, you're just believing that God didn't create them, without a scrap of proof to the contrary. Show some humility, and realise that you don't know everything. No one does. So everyone, believers and non-believers, should stop acting like they do.

And for the record, I'm an agnostic, one that leans heavily towards atheism.

Tl;dr = Stop being dicks.

Everyone can say what they believe, I think some people just argue their points on here well. But, it's not fair to hate on someone because you don't agree with them.

i dont hate on people because i dont agree with them
i argue the point,
Having a different opinion is not the same as hating.

I'm not athiest, I too am agnostic, but I think I do a good job respecting religion that I think is implausible.

I agree with CG. And the general population of EB are dickish about anything they don't believe.
On a related, yet unrelated note, my brother is quite an opinionated self-righteous person.
If you don't believe what he does, you're wrong and incompetent and stupid.
A lot of the people on the boards are this way.
Genuinly wanting to talk to people with differing opinions, and berrating them for their beliefs are two wholly different things
That line is being blurred too often, I think.
There are so many mascots for Atheism, and basically no respected ones for religious groups.

A way I see the world, which may or may not impact people (probably not), is that I see everything as something individual.
It canot be stupid, wrong, right, or logical, it just IS.
And I respect things on that level.
My own personal opinions are seperate from what IS, and they are not right just because they make sense to me.

It's not that I'm anti-religion.

I'm simply anti-stupid people believing religion for stupid reasons.
If someone brings up religion in an argument, I can and will question their motives.

I don't disrespect religious people, merely their beliefs.

Atheism is a religion.

by King Doubt on 10-20-2009 7:50 pm

One trend I see among atheists is the "there is no proof that God exists" argument. They claim that religious people follow blindly. And I must admit, they are right. About the second statement, anyway. How can you say that there is no proof that God exists and still say that they follow blindly? You believe there is no God, but you cannot prove it. That's following blindly too, isn't it now? Nothing separates the two. Atheists are just deists with a different kind of god. So please, don't fight fire with fire.

Actually, Atheists use logic and science on their side instead of two thousand year old books...
Kind of fail argument, brah.
