Fear probably. Fear of difference. They don't really know about it and are thus scared. Well that's what I think. Same thing with homosexuality. Damn fear!

ok it's just wrong for people to tell an anorexic person that they're fat. It's not funny at all.

I don't like the use of the word "illness" for this. It's not like... a virus or something. It's about the person's point of view about themselves. It's an unhealthy obsession with being thin.

I personally find it annoying when a 80 pound girl tells me that she's fat. It just pisses me off. I'm a lot heavier than that but I'm fine with the way I look.

One could argue that it's a psychologican illness that manifests itself physically.

Tomato, tomato.

Psh... what is a doctor going to do for you?
Give you a little pill for anxiety?

You could spend $300 a week on a psychologist who will prolong your visits and accomplish nothing so they get paid more for the extra visits.

If you're bulimic or anorexic you have to realize that it's ok to look like a regular human being and that you're still a person who deserves love and respect even if you aren't thin.

Look at this page.

Notice that if your BMI is less than 18.5 you're considered UNDER WEIGHT. That means you are TOO THIN. Thin to the point of being UNHEALTHY.

You imply that psychologists don't care for the health of their clients, and only care about the money - in some cases, it's true, but to group them all together like this is asinine of you.

Many who suffer from an eating disorder think they look normal - they don't see themselves as being 'too thin'. This is something a psychologist can help change - to give them a healthier image, and change their current, negative self-image.

I suggest you all check out books on Carl Rogers humanistic theories. Many self-help books and specifically, books that turn to people with eating disorders are heavily influenced by his theories.

Of course not every single one would be like that, but there are plenty who are.

A psychologist could help some people with this issue but I think somewhere in people who are anorexic they know the truth. I guess a psychologist could help them realize it. I've just had enough experience with psychologists to say that usually only the person with the issue can make the real changes.

i know one good reason why people laugh at some of those who claim anorexia. they're just seeking attention and don't have any real illness. or more accurately, they want to have that romantic-esque feeling of suffering from something and the whole world not caring, alone and mysterious, nobody understanding. it's a dangerous notion since people who have this strive to really produce the sickness into reality which usually ends in disastrous results.

typical.

carl rogers, eh? deuce did say once about buddhism's influence on that man. might check that one out since im increasingly becoming fond of the dalai lama's teachings lately.
