A Simple Thing To Love

The scars must have been visible behind my hooded eyes,
'Cause even in the dark he saw right through my disguise.
And the pain that made me whisper seemed to disappear at once,
When reality took over and what happened was done.

He held me in his arms as we heard the ocean roar,
He kissed my cheek the same way that the ocean kissed the shore.
He said he'd keep me safe and that he'd never let me go,
I could hear the others laugh but we were never more alone.

His arms were strong and tight as he held me to his chest,
And I'll never lose the feeling of being able to rest,
While the memories and miseries sailed through the night,
And he told me, he assured me, "Everything will be all right."

The conversation turned as the others became blind,
And through their words they failed to even slightly hear me cry.
He couldn't understand, she didn't know, they wouldn't care,
But the closest thing to comfort is just having someone there.

The love that formed between us wrapped a blanket 'round my heart,
And I knew if I had him then I wouldn't fall apart,
We'd never be together 'cause our differences divide,
The way we see the shadows differ from the shady side.

He said he didn't love me, that I already knew,
Every girl deserves him, I'm no luckier than you,
But if one day you find him and he says that you're the one,
Please don't crush my memory of a simple thing to love.
