Well that explained it way better than I could of ever done. Applause
I've never listened to any of those bands but I've known about them for a while.
I like to read up on things. :]

So Emo is just a music genre? I'm still confused., and just because people dress Scene ,does not make them EMO.

Sooo no one is really EMO. I mean if it’s not their emotion and such , or if there not a music genre. Then EMO is just a word…

And I think of myself as a rock chick, but because of love. Because I love the history and the rhythm and the meaning.

I don’t care what a look is called, I like, I use it. XD

Rock Chick? That's awesome. Rock Chick sound so much more fun than 'emo'.

emo is the music, scene is the fashion

I'm suprised Fugazi isn't mentioned here.
They are a great example of a DIY emo band that has got very big yet still remains DIY.

They got offered all sorts of stupid amounts of money to sign to major labels like Sony, but always politely refused.

Ian MacKaye was the singer and guitarist and runs Dischord Records.
He's released hundreds of DIY Punk, Emo and Hardcore records.

www.dischord.com

This label is a major part of the history (and present) of Emotional Hardcore.
I suggest you check out some of the bands on it.

Scream are my favorite!

The reason Fugazi isn't mentioned is Fugazi is a post-hardcore band.

But I do love them, and Dischord has been mentioned.

So does this mean I'm not emo if I don't like those bands?
If that's so, then what's scene?
Where did it come from?

So does that mean that if you like the music genre you are automatically emo?
Does that mean that if you hate scene, you despise people are called emo, but you still like the music you're instantly emo?
What if you like small portions of the fashion or lifestyle?
I know that scene is when you like the fashion, but what if you like the "lifestyle"?
Does such a lifestyle even exist?

"real" emo bands?

by thepilotssister on 10-07-2008 12:39 am

there was a list made of bands that are 'really' emo. what about jawbreaker, mineral, hey mercedes, cap'n jazz, christie front drive, knapsack, hot water music, small brown bike, rainer maria (to a lesser extent), owls, braid, fugazi?! just because they've broken up does not mean that these are not the quintessential basics of the "emo scene" of today.

also, i personally feel that the line drawn between 'scene' style and 'emo' music is obstructed because of the fact that they do indeed go hand-in-hand. and yeah, there are also 'scene' bands out there. there are sects and subsects of emo/scene/emotional hardcore/whatever you want to you call it that you can break things down into even further. you can go so specific with emo/scene/punk that it is indeed sickening to a degree. but yeah, no one wants to hear about that, and i'm probably going to get the shit verbally kicked out of me for all of this.

Jawbreaker is a band that is very hard to classify, since each album differs greatly from the other. However, they have never released an album that can be considered emo. Mineral, Cap'n Jazz et al. are post-emo/hardcore bands.

And since this thread is about being nit-picky, Transistor Transistor and 1905 are punk bands. At least to my knowledge.

They're all very close to, and strongly linked to emo though.
And Cap n Jazz are so so good!

All of those bands that you guys keep mentioning are considered post-hardcore. They're the (unfortunate) link between original emotional hardcore and today's misconception of pop/punk bands and other modern post-hardcore bands as emo.

Some of the post-hardcore bands that have been mentioned, however, (Fugazi, caP'n Jazz, Jawbreaker, Mineral) are pretty damn awesome. Do check them out.

There are not scene bands out there; scene has nothing to do with emotional hardcore.
